At first sight Wijnvoord's paintings appear to be simple landscapes. Observed over time however, these places acquire an artificial, symbolic dimension. The technique and use of color remind us of old masters, but by drawing on the present to construct these works we are reminded of the definition of painting itself: the illusion of a space on a flat surface.
